Parallel session at national conference on climate adaptation

Western Norway Research Institute organised a parallel session on climate adaptation at a Norwegian conference on societal safety and security on 3 January 2011.

"Societal safety and security" is an annual conference organised by the University of Stavanger, the County Governor of Rogaland, the National Joint Headquarters, Rogaland Police District and the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning. The parallel session organised by WNRI comprised three oral presentations (in norwegian):

- Haavard Stensvand, Head of civil protection and emergency planning and member of the secretariat of the NOU Climate Adaptation Committee: Climate-related challenges for societal safety and security. Conclusions and recommendations from the Climate Adaptation Committee.
- Kyrre Groven: Extreme weather and climate change. Prevention of damages and climate adaptation in Bergen, Malmö and Rotterdam.
- Idun A. Husabø: Do we learn from extreme weather events? Results from a survey of the County Governor's Offices.

The presentations of Groven and Husabø originate from the research project Civilclim (http://www.vestforsk.no/en/projects/civil-protection-and-climate-vulnerability-civilclim). About 80 conference delegates chose to attend WNRI's parallel session. Prior to this session, Carlo Aall addressed the entire conference audience with a presentation entitled Adaptation to climate change: the new main challenge for civil protection and emergency planning in Norway?
